Our Training Process

How a dog moves from foundation work to finished, and what you can expect along the way.

The stages

  1. Assessment

We start by seeing what the dog already knows — drive, biddability, response to water and to gunfire.
  2. Foundation

Obedience first. A dog that will not sit and stay under pressure cannot be handled at distance later.
  3. Marks and memory

Single then multiple marked retrieves, on land and in water, building the memory to hold more than one fall.
  4. Handling

Casting and whistle work, so the dog takes a line and can be redirected onto a bird it never saw drop.
  5. Finishing

Full hunting conditions — decoys, cover, cold water, long days — until the work is reliable rather than merely possible.

Tell us about your dog and how you hunt, and we will tell you what the programme would look like.
